I’ve just read that the UK government are all set to allow minors to sign up for online poker, I can’t decide if it’s a good or bad thing.

“The UK government are close to approving a National Lottery backed venture that will have under 16 UK residents legally playing Internet casino based games including roulette and poker. Third point gambling (horse racing, football, etc) is specifically excluded.

Draft proposals have been put forward by the PCCYA (Parliamentary Committee for Community and Youth Affairs) will make it possible for children of 14 - 16 years to have their parents deposit a maximum of £15 per month into the soon to be opened “Rebel Casino” site. Those in the age group 16 - 18 will be limited to a £60 monthly deposit maximum, though funded by their own facility.”

The United Kingdom education secretary Ed Balls who has championed the legislation has said;

“It is time for the UK to sanction a safe place for our children to take part in the modern world. The Internet has changed the way we live, communicate and do business and we recognise the educational benefits it can bring to our youth.

Instead of our children finding illegal and socially unacceptable ways to use the Internet; by being allowed a regulated, safe online gaming access point, we ensure the youth of today will develop communication skills, fair play and better general conduct. This too will prove valuable for later life, giving an insight into contemporary financial management.”

It is thought that a closely monitored trial project through schools and colleges may begin in early 2011.
